Chiropractic is a holistic alternative to medicine that treats a whole gamut of neuromuscular and skeletal dis-ease. At Elements chiropractic, this is done with evidence based, noninvasive, mechanical techniques; massage, physiotherapy and chiropractic manipulative therapy. Below we’ll highlight some of the more common health issues that we treat with chiropractic.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – This condition is most commonly associated with people who are constantly using a computer. Typing is a motion that, when performed repetitively and with poor posture, can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Symptoms include pain, numbness, weakness, or a burning sensation. The nerves in the fingertips travel through the wrist, up the arm, and into the neck. The Median nerve maybe pinched in any or all of these places due to inflammation, muscular tightness and joint misalignment.
Degenerative Disc Disease – is not really a disease but a term used to describe the normal changes in your spinal discs as you age. Spinal discs are soft, compressible discs that separate the interlocking bones (vertebrae),that make up the spine. The discs act as shock absorbers for the spine, allowing it to flex, bend, and twist. Degenerative disc disease can take place throughout the spine, but it most often occurs in the discs in the lower back (lumbar region) and the neck (cervical region). The changes in the discs can result in back or neck pain. These conditions may put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, leading to pain and possibly affecting nerve function.
What causes Degenerative Disc Disease? As we age, our spinal discs break down, or degenerate, which may result in degenerative disc disease in some people. These age-related changes include:
The loss of fluid in your discs. This reduces the ability of the discs to act as shock absorbers and makes them less flexible. Loss of fluid also makes the disc thinner and narrows the distance between the vertebrae.
Tiny tears or cracks in the outer layer (annulus or capsule) of the disc. The jelly like material inside the disc (nucleus) may be forced out through the tears or cracks in the capsule, which causes the disc to bulge, break open (rupture), or break into fragments.
These changes are more likely to occur in people who smoke cigarettes and those who do heavy physical work (such as repeated heavy lifting). People who are obese are also more likely to have symptoms of degenerative disc disease. A sudden (acute) injury leading to a herniated disc (such as a fall) may also begin the degeneration process. As the space between the vertebrae gets smaller, there is less padding between them, and the spine becomes less stable. The body reacts to this by constructing bony growths called bone spurs (osteophytes). Bone spurs can put pressure on the spinal nerve roots or spinal cord, resulting in pain and affecting nerve function.
Disc Problems- Disc Bulges, Disc Herniation – Intervertebral discs are positioned between the vertebrae in the spine. The outside of a disc; is made from cartilage, and in the center is a jelly like solution. These discs serve many purposes, including allowing movement of the spine, creating space between the vertebrae, and acting as shock absorbers. The gelatinous middle allows the disc to compress and expand based on impact and movement. Trauma to the spine can cause the discs to herniated, bulge, become displaced (slipped disc), or even rupture. Trauma or direct injury to the area is not the only cause, however. As we get older, the discs can begin to weaken and dehydrate. These conditions can put pressure on the nerves around the spine and cause pain.
Fibromyalgia– is a condition that we still do not know much about. There is no specific known cause, and it could be brought on by many factors. The main symptom of fibromyalgia is chronic pain throughout the body, mainly in joints. The pain may be achy, sharp, radiating, burning, or shooting and it may be mild or severe. Fibromyalgia has also been known to bring on other conditions like trouble sleeping, headaches, depression, and anxiety. While there is no known cure for fibromyalgia, chiropractic treatment can help to uncover what may be causing the pain and also provide relief for the pain. The cause of fibromyalgia could be physical, mental, or emotional, so a full examination will be performed. Adjustments and chiropractic massage can be used to relieve pain from the affected areas. The added effects of chiropractic treatment such as increased energy levels, better circulation, and a stronger immune system can also help to fight the effects of fibromyalgia.
Golfer’s Elbow, Medial Epicondylitis– is an inflammatory condition of the medial epicondyle of the elbow. The anterior forearm contains several muscles that are involved with flexing the fingers and thumb, and flexing and pronating the wrist. The tendons of these muscle come together in a common tendinous sheath, which is inserted into the medial epicondyle of the humerous at the elbow joint. In response to minor injury, or sometimes for no obvious reason at all, this point of insertion becomes inflamed.Causes The condition is called Golfer’s Elbow because in making a golf swing this tendon is stressed, especially if a non-overlapping (baseball style) grip is used; many people, however, who develop the condition have never handled a golf club. It is also sometimes called Pitcher’s Elbow due to the same tendon being stressed by the throwing of objects such as a baseball, but this usage is much less frequent. Other names are Climber’s Elbow and Little League Elbow: All of the flexors of the fingers insert at the medial epicondyle, making this the most common elbow injury for rock climbers, whose sport is very grip intensive.
Headaches– Many people believe that headaches are caused by loud noise, being tired, or being stressed. While these are all factors that can lead to headaches, the major cause in most cases is tightness in the neck and shoulders. The tightness can cause misalignments in the vertebrae of your neck, resulting in pain. 80% of all headaches originate from the neck. With a typical cervicogenic (neck origin) headache, a person usually feels pain starting at the base of the skull which radiates into the temples, eyeballs, and forehead. Massage of the neck and shoulder muscles can release tension, and a chiropractic adjustment can realign the vertebrae in your neck. Chiropractic can help eliminate the cause of your headaches rather than offering a temporary relief from the symptoms.
Joint Dysfunction-Dysfunction occurs when joints become stiff and full movement is restricted. It can be caused by an injury, poor posture, overuse/underuse of a joint, muscle imbalance, as well as other factors. Like arthritis, joint dysfunction can cause pain in the joint and the surrounding muscles, and can also cause problems in other parts of the body due to overcompensation. One common form of joint dysfunction is sacroiliac joint dysfunction, which occurs where the base of the spine meets the pelvis. It causes low back pain and prohibits movement. This condition is often misdiagnosed because the symptoms are similar to sciatica or a herniated disc.
–Muscle Strain-is an injury to a muscle or tendon in which the muscle fibres tear as a result of over stretching or over use. A strain is also colloquially known as apulledmuscle.
Neck/ Back Pain– Pain along the spinal column in your neck or back is usually caused by subluxations, or misalignments of your vertebrae. A small misalignment can cause pain by causing pressure on nerves. Left untreated, these subluxations can cause muscle spasms and increasing pain.
Osteoarthitis – is a condition that is caused by the wearing down of the cartilage between joints. Some of the major joints that are affected are the knees, hips, back, neck, and hands/wrist. Arthritis can be painful and can cause the affected areas to not function properly. Arthritis in one area can cause arthritis or other problems in a different joint. For instance, if you have arthritis in your left knee, you may compensate for this by putting more pressure on your right side, leading to right hip problems.
Pinched Nerve -When a nerve is squeezed or compressed it is called a “pinched nerve”. This can be caused by spinal misalignments, bulging or herniated discs, or other factors. The increased pressure on the nerve causes inflammation, pain, and sometimes muscle spasms. The pressure on the nerve must be relieved in order to alleviate the pain. An examination can reveal the cause of the pain, and an adjustment can relieve the pain by properly aligning the spine and addressing the cause of the pain.
Sciatica -is a condition that results when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated. Bulging discs, spinal subluxations, and muscle spasms can all cause increased pressure on the sciatic nerve. When this happens it causes pain, numbness, and weakness in the lower back and leg. To properly treat sciatica the cause of the condition needs to be diagnosed and properly treated.
Spinal Stenosis – Pseudo-claudication; Central spinal stenosis; Foraminal spinal stenosis Spinal stenosis is narrowing of the spinal column that causes pressure on the spinal cord, or narrowing of the openings (called neural foramina) where spinal nerves leave the spinal column.
Causes, incidence and risk factors
Spinal stenosis usually occurs as a person ages and the disks become drier and start to shrink. At the same time, the bones and ligaments of the spine swell or grow larger due to arthritis or long-term swelling (inflammation).
Spinal stenosis may also be caused by:
Arthritis of the spine, usually in middle-aged or elderly people
Bone diseases, such as Paget’s disease of bone and achondroplasia
Defect or growth in the spine that was present from birth (congenital defect)
Herniated or slipped disk, which often happened in the past
Injury that causes pressure on the nerve roots or the spinal cord
Tumors in the spine
Symptoms- Often, symptoms will get worse slowly over time. Most often, symptoms will be on one side of the body or the other. Symptoms include:
Numbness, cramping, or pain in the back, buttocks, thighs, or calves, or in the neck, shoulders, or arms
Weakness of part of a leg or arm
Symptoms are more likely to be present or get worse when you stand or walk. They will often lessen or disappear when you sit down or lean forward. Most people with spinal stenosis cannot walk for a long period of time. Patients with spinal stenosis may be able to ride a bicycle with little pain. More serious symptoms include:
Difficulty or poor balance when walking
Problems controlling urine or bowel movements
Tennis Elbow – also known as Lateral epicondylitis, shooter’s elbow and archer’s elbow, is a condition where the outer part of the elbow becomes sore and tender. It is commonly associated with playing tennis and other racquet sports, though the injury can happen to almost anyone. Tennis elbow is an overuse injury occurring in the lateral side of the elbow region, but more specifically, occurs at the common extensor tendon that originates from the lateral epicondyle. While the common name tennis elbow suggests that people who play tennis may develop this condition, other activities of daily living may also cause it. Data was collected from 113 patients in a study who had tennis elbow and the main factor between them all was overexertion. Sports activities as well as those who used the same repetitive motion for many years, especially in their profession, suffered from tennis elbow. It was also common in individuals who performed motions they were unaccustomed to. The data also mentioned that the majority of patients suffered tennis elbow in their right arms. Other descriptions for tennis elbow are lateral epicondylosis, lateral epicondylalgia, or simply lateral elbow pain.
